Creating a multistage process in Simul8

Often a work centre is used to represent only a portion of a single process, take a photocopier example, the process may require the operator only for the load and unload phases of the cycle and be free during the copying phase. The easiest way to mimic this functionality is to create three work centres a load stage a copy and an unload. Then draw a net around the processes and right click with the mouse and select the create group option. A new group containing these elements will be created. Next move to the objects pull down menu and select groups. Now highlight the group you have created by double clicking on it. Next , tick the 'Limit items in work group' option and enter a 1 in the field.

Simul8 will now limit the number of parts in this part of the model to 1. Next add resources to work centres 1 and 3. Finally, If you are simulating a multiple copy operation then use the 'Batching' option on 'Routing out' on the third work centre to specify how many items leave the copier.

The Grouping option can be vary useful to limit total number of items in any area of a simulation model. This is particularly useful in the simulation of business process examples when the workloads for a total area are limited due to the number staff available.
